Windows 7 Starter Edition Question?
Hi everyone! I am going to order Toshiba Netbook and it has Windows 7 Sterter Edition Installed.
It is important to note that Windows 7 Starter still includes only a subset of the features offered in the higher editions of Windows 7 such as Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and above. Windows 7 Starter does not include:
•Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
•Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
•The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
•Multi-monitor support.
•DVD playback.
•Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
•Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
•Domain support for business customers.
•XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.
Would I be able to watch movies on netbook using anothe program such as Divx Player? I am very worried that I wont be able to watch movies ot listen music on this device because it doesnt support DVD playback
Please help! THANK YOU!
When using a netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition, you will definitely be able to watch videos or movies as long as you have the right CODECS. A CODEC is a software tool which allows the encoding and decoding of a digital data stream. Once you have the proper CODECS installed, you should be able to use any media player to watch movies in most popular formats. Some media players such as the Kantaris Media Player come with CODECS preinstalled so you don’t need to download them separately.

Netbooks are great for watching vidoes when away from home. I have many friends that use their netbooks to watch TV shows at Starbucks or other locations. Have fun with your Toshiba netbook!
Since it has no DVD drive, you have no place to put a DVD, so you can’t watch movies on a DVD.
It has very little processing power so, although you can watch video files you download to it (which you can’t do legally), you’d have to watch in a small window (maybe 1/4 of the screen or less) to get any kind of motion. Otherwise all you’d see would be a series of pixelated still pictures.
bottom line – a netbook is for email and web surfing, not for watching movies. You can listen to music, but the volume on most netbooks is only really suitable for earphones unless you’re in a quiet room.
