Google DC Talks: A Conversation with Chris Anderson

As part of the Google D.C. Talks series, Google’s Washington office hosted a special book talk with Chris Anderson, Editor in Chief of Wired Magazine and best-selling author of “The Long Tail.”

In his new book “Free: The Future of a Radical Price,” Anderson makes the provocative case that in many instances businesses can profit more from giving things away than they can by charging for them.

This event took place on July 7, 2009 at Google’s offices in Washington, D.C.

Duration : 1:0:50

    Fair …

    /wiki/Fair_use
Fair use is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as use for scholarship or review. It provides for the legal, non-licensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another author’s work under a four-factor balancing test.

    The term “fair use” …
The term “fair use” originated in the United States, but has been added to Israeli law as well; a similar principle, fair dealing, exists in some other common law jurisdictions.

    I live in a rural …
I live in a rural community. We only received DSL two years ago. Even today, just 3 miles down the road there are no affordable services. Broadband dish is a failure because that is only high speed down and not up. There are overly priced alternate satellite solutions but the service and price at $150 a month for not much more then dial-up performance is outside the range of the average person living in most rural communities. Want to see a stimulus program? Roll out WiMax in rural communities.

Freemium model is working from 5 years or more, but it was still interesting too see what top brains thinks about it now. (And sell some not free books :P If I was siting there for more than an hour I would definitely buy one). But Google please record better (louder) audio next time. And hurry up with the free Chrome OS!

Now Google, Quit shutting my channels down. I have had enough re uploading all of this. In fact why does Google staff go through the old accounts and put the videos in that no longer have or lost. There are many that people are missing out on.

    there are …
there are electronical impulses followed by chemical ones, the 2 work together.
the difference is the brain is not like a programmed computer: it doesn’t know exactly what to do according to each siuation, which is why training (math, sports, etc )makes perfect ;P

    The human brain …
The human brain consists of electrical impulses and works almost identically to a computer in many respects – we just happen to be hardwired in a way that allows us to think on levels above math, such as emotion and reason, but these are still rooted in the same basic process. For some reason we find it difficult to go down to the most basic level, which is math. It’s just how we’re “programmed”, as it were.

I don’t think that is true anymore. The only way to upload longer videos is to become a partner.

The rules don’t apply to Google, since they own YouTube. :P Anyway, partners (like me :D ) are allowed to upload videos of any length.

    Yep, cant believe …
Yep, cant believe people fear tools they pretty much use on a daily basis. Why is it that when many get on this site, they forget that the real world exists around them along side with the net and other technologies? I truly believe that the name “Youtube” needs to change.

    electrical …
electrical connections are a lot faster than the ones in our brains…. BUT, in order for all those electrical connections to happen in the right way so the result is correct, it takes a human brain to code these eletrical messages :) .
