What is the difference between domain name forwarding and redirection?
I recently purchased a second domain name. My first domain name is mapped onto my blog, just the way I like it. I want to set it up so that, assuming someone were to enter the second domain name into their browser, it would instantly transfer them to to the correct website.
My registrar offers free "web site forwarding" but it’s not quite what I’m looking for. When I enter my second domain name into my browser, my site does pop up but it doesn’t change the URL in my address bar to the "correct" website. Also, my registrar (which is Register.com) puts a banner ad at the bottom of the screen – you can pay for Premium services, which would get rid of the ad but I don’t think it would solve my issue.
I think it has something to do with the difference between forward and redirection. Is there one? Assuming someone were to enter the second domain name into the URL of their browser, my site would pop up but it’s not as if it’s truly redirecting them, just "pointing" them to the right place – the "mistake" hasn’t really been fixed.
Does that make sense? If anyone can offer advice, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
Hello,
What you want to do is incorporate a 301 redirect to your site. This will need to go in the default document of your current website.
